First day at nursery

He walks in & you stay at the fence.

Settling in means he walks and you wait. At some point he stops turning around. That is exactly the plan, and it still hurts.

Three weeks of settling in.

Ten minutes at first, then an hour, then the whole morning. At the start you sit in the corridor on a chair built for four-year-olds, listening to somebody in the next room singing your surname.

Something that goes with him.

At home his shirt hangs next to yours. In the morning he puts on the same thing you are wearing and walks through a strange door in it. You stay at the fence, but part of you is in the group room.

Triceratops

Three horns, no hurry. At nursery a dinosaur on your chest is not a motif, it is an opening line to the entire group.

Why it makes the morning easier

  1. Getting dressed without a fight.

A child who resists every jumper will put on the shirt the dad is wearing too. Not a trick, just how it works.

  2. He recognises it himself.

The print sits at the front, small, always in the same place. Children who cannot read yet sort by pictures.

  3. It survives the sandpit.

180 gsm organic jersey, washes at 30 degrees. A nursery year consists largely of mud.

What size is a nursery child

The number is height in centimetres, not age. Three years is roughly 104, by six it is usually 116. We stock every second number and nothing in between, so when in doubt take the bigger one and turn the sleeves up once.

Put a name on it
Nursery fills baskets with white shirts. A fabric pen and your surname solve that before it becomes a problem.
Think one size ahead
If there are weeks between ordering and the first day, take the next size up. Children grow faster than parcels travel.
Washing
30 degrees, inside out, no tumble dryer. The cotton could take more, the print could not.

What people ask

What size fits a three-year-old?

Roughly 104. The number is height in centimetres, not age.

When in doubt, take the bigger one. A shirt that still fits in spring is worth more than one that fits perfectly today.

Does it actually help with settling in?

It does not replace a hug. But children need something concrete from home during a separation, and a shirt goes with them without anyone losing it or leaving it on the bus.

A soft toy has to be explained to the staff first.

How many washes does it take?

At 30 degrees and without a dryer, the print outlasts a nursery year comfortably. What kills it is the tumble dryer and an iron straight onto the motif.

Can you print a name on it?

We do not print names. A fabric pen at home does the same job, survives the wash and can be written over for the next child.
